"Work" is formally defined as an activity for which wages or commissions are earned, or that competes directly with activities of Canadian citizens or permanent residents in the Canadian labour market. (Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations)
**Please note that failure by a foreign worker to maintain legal status may subject both the individual and the Canadian employer to penalties. Employers have an obligation to ensure that any foreign worker employed by the organization or on their site in Canada is authorized to work in Canada. A person who enters Canada is granted entry for a specific purpose. Undertaking activities which do not correspond to that purpose can have consequences for both the individual and the Company.
Employers who fail to provide foreign workers with wages, work conditions or an occupation which are consistent with their initial job offer could be denied access to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program for two years. Immigration authorities will also consider employers past compliance history in deciding whether to issue a work permit.**
